What is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the term used to describe all methods of permanent hair removal (there are 3 types). Electrolysis is the only hair removal method deemed permanent by the FDA.
The electrologist inserts a very fine needle into the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft (there is no blood as we are not piercing the skin). A small amount of current is applied. The hair cells are destroyed as the current creates a chemical reaction, heat energy, or both.
What does electrolysis feel like?
Individual tolerances vary greatly, but in general, it can feel like tingling or a sting. The sting from the treatment is quick and then it's over. Generally, even the most sensitive person can tolerate electrolysis. The treatment can be adjusted to make it more bearable if needed. We can discuss topical numbing cream use if necessary.
Is electrolysis safe?
Electrolysis is very safe. We follow state & federal-mandated sanitation guidelines. The needles used are sterile, individually wrapped, and disposed of after one-time use. The tweezers are dry heat sterilized, one use per client. The technician wears gloves and for close-face work, a mask is worn. Hospital-grade disinfectant is used on surfaces between each client. The technician has been trained in the correct electrolysis techniques and procedures. Also, your technician has been fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
You may have slight swelling or reddening during or right after your treatments. This usually goes away quickly. Most people resume normal activities following their electrolysis appointment.
How many treatments are required?
It's important to understand that electrolysis is a process. The number of treatments needed will vary for each individual depending on the type and amount of hair. Other factors that affect hair growth are genetics, hormones, certain medications, stress, and previous methods of hair removal. A treatment plan will be discussed during the consultation.
